Fun and Safety is (not) a title that always works. Fun and Safety is a balancing act. The presence and absence of balance is virtually the motto of the day at the moment. Through Sebastian Grande, discarded everyday objects, often left on the street, have been transformed from objects to subjects, as well as representations of monuments to our consumer culture.
However, he rejected the totalitarian claim of such an ascription. Instead – in keeping with the title, between impulse and planning – he drew reflections on fictitious objects and on spatial situations, as well as on rearrangements and their similarities. His artistic practice and the drawings and prints shown in the exhibition explore how everyday life can be seen and thought, so that everyday life balances the title. Have fun! It’s safe!

Saying hi. I wanted to start a conversation but nobody's here. It's just me talking to myself. Somehow, having monologues is like throwing a ball out. It flies and flies, falls on the floor and rolls somewhere else, far away from here. Talking to ourselves, talking to you, to another person or an object. Is there anyone that we wanted to reach and build connections with? First of all, let's see what the objects are trying to tell us.

Two hands build a figure out of wood and linen. Arranged in a row each video shows the individual construction of a form that only makes a fleeting appearance. Similar to a sketch or a drawing, a multitude of constellations are tested and documented. In their compilation, the collected videos revolve around the spatial understanding of a figure and its possibilities. A sequence of moments emerges, becomes a whole and disintegrates again.

I‘ve only ever seen the factory from a distance. It is ubiquitous on the horizon. The city that surrounds it, was built especially for the complex. The more I go in, the more my way of using my sketchbook changes. All buildings of the mill have their specific purpose and form station in a long successive chain. I can‘t tell where the floor ends and the factory begins anymore. Nevertheless, this zone is a self-contained system, completely independent of anything outside. 
My notes outline the topography of this place, forming a sequence of structures and collected impressions. The drawing is not devoted to a lifelike representation. The connection of the individual fragments creates the drawing. The only thing that remains is its unidentified surface. According to Marc Augé, a place emerges as soon as it is identified as such. In the absence of any identification, the anonymous architecture creates its own space. A non-place. The conceptualized forms of the buildings and their impact on the environment become an independent landscape.

How can you define non-space without showing it?

In “Cartography of a non-place” Grande is showing the upside down of what we expect to see. Inspired by the grammar of nautical charts, he is transforming 7 old Biedermeier windows into a new way of grasping reality from a multitude of perspectives. Facing them from one side you see a grid structure painted directly on the sanded glass, while approaching them from the other side, they appear like fragmented maps, easy to recognize by their cartographic vocabulary but impossible to read due to their lack of territorial representation/reflection. Instead of a traditional art historical window to the world, Grande offers the dysfunctional window as a deceptive depiction of an illusive navigational tool for an inaccessible world. These false topographical sites question our new trust placed in maps, which are no longer static, but have shifted to real-time mapping by adapting to the constant flow of information.

The seriality of the windows is a recurring theme in his single etching presentation “Distortion” showing a manipulated series of left-over material waste hills resembling the production chain of the paper mill where the photography was originally taken. The industrial machinery of the recycle system brings to mind the aesthetics and ideas found in Metropolis by Fritz Lang and may indicate the many similarities between the early 20th and early 21st century we’re slowly starting to realize.

“Distortion” is the newest development from Grande’s earlier photoetching series “Deceptive Recognition” from 2016, in which he investigates the architectural qualities of industrial buildings. “Deceptive Recognition” depicts an abandoned spinning mill, where only emptiness is left over witnessing the former production that once took place, enhanced by the light entering the space from open doors and windows contributing to an improved feeling of desertedness. 

Clearly inspired by the Bechers from the Dusseldorf school one recognizes the distanced, purely observational and disimpassioned gaze of the photographer through his lens; though somehow interrupted by the poetics appearing in the image, offering the beholder to forget about the motif as such, and invites us instead to participate in the mental archeological deciphering of what Grande refers to as ‘architectural anthropology’.
